Communicating with clients who have a disability

As it is very likely to work with patients who have disabilities, it is important to be professional, mindful and respectful whilst communicating.  As Barenstein (2013) states, respectful communication with people who have disabilities is vital in providing the greatest quality of care. By addressing them as you would with other patients whilst also tending to their certain individual needs, not only is trust created between patient and practitioner, but it promotes effective communication.

This video is a demonstration of the importance in treating individuals equally whilst tending to certain individual needs. By focusing on the patient and not the interpreter, you demonstrate active listening and promote trust and comfort in patients. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YXyTNIdux4
